POOR DISPLAY ON ROUGH GROUND
The meeting of Marist and Technical Old Boys at the Stadium made plain the fact that it is impossible to play really good football on a ground* the surface of which is as rough as some of our country roads. Hali-way through the second spell, M. Duffy, the Marist outside right, being charged by Ronald, the Technical fuil-baqk, came down very heavily and broke his leg. Trie 'delay caused by thi's occurrence made it impossible for the game'to continue, ;and the referee abandoned the match on'account" of the failing light, with •twenty minutes still to play;- • ■ The game did not, rise to any great heights, and although Marist were one goal to the, good when the match was abandoned, it was always likely that Technical ..would at . least even the score. They started at a brisk pace, and, with the assistance Of the wind in the first spell, their forwards gave the Marist defences busy time. Had it been possible to control the ball better, Turkington, in goal for Marist, would have'had.'more to do than he did have, although his work was lightened by the solid defensive play of both Marist, backs, who repeatedly broke 'up the .Technical attack just when'it looked' really dangerous. Technical threw, the ball about more- than usual, and their forwards gave a reasonably good display., considering the poor playing conditions, but they, in common with other teams, lack a snap shot in their ranks.. The Marist front line, with'Nuhns at centre-forward, displayed better control than their opponents, and indulged in some pretty scissors movements at times. The halves on both sides" played as well as the ground would allow them to, it being impossible to make passes to their forwards with any degree of precision, while the display of the full-backs was somewhat erratic for the same reason. The game was totally devoid of those incidents which raise the spectators to enthusiasm, and no one was sorry when the abandonment brought the display to a close, Marist leading by one goal to nil. : The referee was Mr. J. Houston.
