For Plunket Funds. A "Cinderella" i dance, ill aid of Plunket Society funds, will be held at Miss Phyllis Bates's new studio in Willis Street on the night of Saturday, May 28. Miss Bates, who was responsible for two very successful cabaret evenings last season, is arranging this effort which, to judge by the many inquiries already made concerning it, should be exceptionally popular. A professional orchestra has been engaged for the occasion. Parties are now being made up for the dance and any further information may be obtained by telephoning the Plunket' rooms. This dance was to have been held on May 14, but had to be postponed. / .
Ex-Royal Naval Men.
The weekly "500" card party of the Ex-Royal Naval Association was held in the clubrooms, Manners Street, last evening, when a very enjoyable time was spent by all. Prizes were won by Mrs. Binny 1, Mrs. Bell 2, consolation Mrs. Allison. Men's: Mr. A. Atkinson 1, Mr. T. Tucker 2, consolation Mr. R. Bell. After cards, the ladies played ping-pong. , . ' * Bride-elect Entertained.
Mesdames D. Paxton and A. Hogg were the hostesses when a large number of the friends of Miss Jean McWhinnie met in the Orange Hall, Petone, to hpld a "gift party" , in honour of her apprbaching marriage to Mr. Etnest Wood, Eltham. The evening was spent in dancing and singing, Mr. A-. Hogg being M.C., and items were given by Mrs. Tucker, Mrs. H. McWhinnie, Mrs; Ogilvy-Brown, Misses B. and J. Hogg, and Messrs. Burnett, Hepburn, Wills, and H. and A. McWhinnie. The opening of the parcels brought for the guest of honour revealed many attractive gifts, and on her behalf Mr. Wood thanked the hostesses and all those Who had contributed to the success of the party. Miss McWhinnie was also the guest of honour recently at a "bathroom" tea held in the Y.W.C.A. rooms, when the hostesses were Mrs. G. Martelli, Misses H. Reid, and P. Madsen, and a "pantry", tea was held at the home of Mrs. A. Houston, Miramar, Miss McWhinnie again being the recipient of many useful gifts and good wishes. Victoria League Juniors.
A happy gathering of the Junior Circle of the Wellington Victoria League took place last night in the league's clubroom, Lambton Quay. Following a committee meeting when various social activities, notably the league's ball, were discussed, two amusing' one-act plays were read. One was "The Centurion's Billet at Swacking Bulphen," the parts being taken by Mesdames H. Brown and B. McKinlay, and Misses Myfawny Davis, Muriel Hunt, Phyllis FitzGerald, Marjorie Gibbons, and Irene Norris. The second play, "Five Characters In Search of a Change," was-read by Misses Kathleen Peart, Marjories Osborne, Nancy Walls, Marjorie Cowdey. 'Fatrifcia Gleclhill, Jean Dempster, ; and Frances Gardiner. Stage' directions. were • read by Miss Mary Butler. After the readings, supper was served. .Miss Patricia Gledhill was in charge of arrangements for the evening.
Surprise Cocktail Party.
To bid farewell to Miss Mary Gellatley who left by the Awatea last night for Sydney, a number of her friends paid a surprise visit to her home at Kilbirnie and held a cocktail party. Those present were Miss Gellatley (who wqre a gown of American floral crepe),,jkr. and Mrs. H. Rahson, Misses Constance, Lillian, and Una Ranson, Joan Gaynor, B. Meadows, Moira Higgins; and Messrs. G. Ranson, J. Dennie, A. Mason, B. Billing, and M. Clarke.
