COMING JUBILEE

CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH,

THE TERRACE

On Sunday next the jubilee of the Congregational Church on Wellington Terrace will be celebrated by a series of special services. At the 11 a.m. service the Rev. H. W. Newell, M.A., will preside, with the junior Sunday school participating. The evening service will be conducted by the Rev. Brian Kilroy, of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church. The jubilee birthday party will take place at 6 p.m. on the following Wednesday, to be followed at 7.30 p.m. with a thanksgiving service. On Sunday, May 29, the morning service will be in charge of the Rev. Harry Johnson; there will be a big rally at 4 o'clock in the afternoon, and in the evening Canon D. J. Davis, B.Sc, of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul, will preach. The Congregational Church came into being in Wellington in 1842. It first met in the Mechanics' Institute, on Lambton Quay, until 1866, when a church was erected in Woodward Street (named after the first honorary pastor of the church). In 1871 the late Rev. W..H. West, 8.A., LL.D., an eminent scholar, . became the pastor, and a period of expansion followed. The present building and hall were opened free of debt on May 25, 1888, largely owing to the generosity of the late Mr. Joseph Bume. The architect was. Mr. W. J. Mountfort, Christchurch. Dr. West died on July 9, 1889, and was succeeded by the Rev. Alexander Milne, M.A., who passed away in December of the same year. The Rev. G. J. Allen, 8.A., was pastor from February, 1891, until February, 1894, during which time the organ, presented by the late Mrs. W. R. Williams and her son, was erected in the church. The Rev. J. Reed Glasson began his ministry in August, 1894, and continued until his death in December, 1923, a period of nearly thirty years. He was succeeded by the Rev. E. R. Weeks, who resigned at the end of 1928. He, in turn, was succeeded by the Rev. Charles Wickham as acting pastor. The Rev. H. W. Newell, M.A., began his ministry on February 14, 1930.
