MEN'S HOCKEY

CONDITIONS GOOD STANDARD OF PLAY Excellent weather and good playing surfaces brought an improvement in the standard of men's hockey on Saturday, the senior A games being faster and more keenly disputed than was the case last week. Several of the teams still showed major weaknesses, however, tardy tackling and poor combination being particularly noticeable.

SENIOR A UNIVERSITY v. WESLEY. The game between University and Wesley, at Karori Park, was not impressive in the opening stages, but the students made it more interesting with brisk tackling. However, the first score came to Wesley from a passing rush, Byres getting in an easy shot after the University goalie had come I too far out. 1 Early in the second spell Shaw scored for University and before the game had gone much further Pitt scored and put the students in the lead. Wesley retaliated almost immediately and Latham finished off a good passing rush with a shot, into goal, making the score 2-all. University were not to be denied, however, and, after drawing the Wesley goalie, Shaw scored University's third goal. After a period of indifferent play Wesley made a successful attack, Maloney shooting after the ball had been passed briskly in. University 3; Wesley 3. Messrs. W. G, Purves and R. Rolle were the umpires.

HUIA I V. KARORI I .Huia I and Karori I put on a bright display at Naenae, and although the grass was long/and made passing difficult, both teams were in good form and a willing encounter took place. Huia forced the pace at the fctart, but the Karori back line held firm, P. Spiers doing some fine work. Things looked awkward for Karori at one stage, until M. Browne and C. Edwards carried play to Huia territory. McDonald centred well, but Edwards's shot at goal missed narrowly. An infringement in the circle resulted in a penalty bully being awarded Huia, and this MDentice netted. At the conclusion of the first half Karori had' play well down in Huia territory. Karori were on the attack nearly all the second half,' but lack of finish resulted in many scoring opportunities being mipsed. Huia broke away from their own twenty-five, and Dentice netted. C. Edwards scored for Karori, the game ending Huia' I 2, Karori I 1. Messrs. W. A. Scott and W. Keys were the umpires.

WELLINGTON V. HUIA II

Wellington had the better of their game against Huia II at Naenae, and made the pace from the start. Huia were pressed hard in their own territory in the early stages, and were forced to concede corners. Wellington came near to scoring when Stephenson just missed an easy shot, and eventually Wellington did score, Ferguson netting the only goal of the first half. Huia's defence was ragged, and wild hitting cost them several .penalties. At the commencement of the second half Huia made a great effort to take the offensive, and although for a considerable time they had play down near the Wellington goal mouth, they missed any chances that came their way. Wellington broke away, and Ferguson put the issue beyond doubt by scoring again. The game ended with the score Wellington 2, Huia II 0. j Messrs. H. Martin and C. Harvey were the umpires. " '
