FIRE IN RESERVE
FARMER PROSECUTED
{By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")
PALMEBSTON N*, This. Day. To burn rubbish on his farm at Opiki, James Thomas Hay lit a fire about eleven feet from the boundary of a State forest reserve which was adjacent. Unfortunately, while momentarily attending to a small boy who had become terrified at the smoke and flames, the fire spread into the reserve and got out of control, with the result that several acres of trees were burned.
In the Magistrate's Court today Hay was prosecuted in connection with the matter. It was explained that no fire can be lit within twenty chains- of a State forest and that the Department looked seriously upon the failure of the public to comply with - this section of the Forests Act, which provided a maximum. penalty of three months' imprisonment or a fine of £50. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., agreed that it was a serious matter. He imposed a nominal fine of £3. .
