BRITISH NEWSPRINT
SAFEGUARDING INDUSTRY
PURCHASE OF MILLS (Received May 13, 10.40 8.m.) LONDON, May 12. Bowater and Lloyds Sales, Ltd., have agreed to purchase the Cornerbrook paper mills, Newfoundland, as a step, to safeguard the British newsprint industry. The threatened shortage of pulp which began in 1937 resulted jn a rise in prices, and was accentuated by the tactics of the Scandinavian producers. British newspapers came to the assistance, and Bowaters voluntarily agreed to increase their prices. The incident showed the vulnerability of the British newsprint industry unless it controlled the sources 61 supply, hence the present deal.
