FAIR TO FINE

MILDER TEMPERATURES Special forecast for Wellington:— Light northerly" winds, freshening tomorrow. Weather fair to fine and mild. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing 24 hours, is for light to moderate and variable winds, with north-westerlies prevailing in Otago and Southland. Northerlies, however, may be expected to set in later about and south of Cook Strait and to freshen somewhat. The weather at first will be fair to fine generally, but cloud will increase in the western and far southern districts of the South Island and scattered rain will develop. Temperatures will be mild. An anticyclone of considerable intensity still covers the Tasman Sea and New Zealand, its centre at present being just to the west of the North Island. The first of a series of westerly disturbances, however, has crossed the southern' portion of the South Island, but this was of very slight intensity and its only effect was to cause a considerable increase in cloud in the westei;n and southern districts of, the South Island, with a little scattered rain in south Westland and in southern coastal areas. Otherwise unusually fine conditions have prevailed over the Dominion, and although there has been very little change in wind direction, temperatures have become milder, Auckland has continued to have beautifully fine weather, with cool temperatures and light breezes from the south or south-east. In Wellington also the weather has been., very fine with only scattered cloud. A light to moderate northerly wind has prevailed and temperatures have become considerably milder. Yesterday's maximum and minimum temperatures were 59 and 47,5 degrees respectively, and, 7.2 hours of bright sunshine were recorded. Christehurch has been equally fortunate, fine weather prevailing there with light and variable breezes. Another frost was recorded last night. In Dunedin it has been mild, but cloudy to overcast with a light westerly breeze. The weather this morning showed signs of clearing.
