MINIATURE FLOOD

WATER PIPE, BURSTS

DAMAGE TO HUTT ROAD

Through the breaking of' one of the 24in water feeders from Wainui-o-mata this morning, a portion of the Hutt Road south of the Petorie railway crossing "bubbled" to a,height of two feet or more for k distance of about fifteen feet

The break is near the site of a similar break which occurred about a week ago, although there does not appear to be any connection between' the two.

The .actual, bursting of the; water through the surface was recorded on the pressure gauge and recording chart of the waterworks department of the City Corporation in Wellington at 8.50 ajn. The cause of the.burst, as far as eta be ascertained, is the recent cold weather.

As soon as the drop in pressure was noticed'by the department, meh were sent to the scene, and it is anticipated that by tonight or early tomorrow the broken portion of the pipe Will have been replaced and the road in the' vicinity repaired. On their arrival tKfe authorities slowly eased off the water valves on the beach Half-way between Petone and Ngahauranga. Any hasty turning off of the water might easily have caused, another burst pipe.
