THE HARDEST SUBSTANCE

The diamond, hardest of minerals, remains unmatched as an abrasive, Dr. Frank J. Tone (U.S.A.)' declared recently in acknowledging the award to him of the William H. . Perkin Medal by the American Section of the Society of Chemical Industry. Dr. Tone is president of the Carborundum Company and an engineer who has done much to develop abrasives and heat-resisting compounds. So hard is the diamond that it is in'corporated in grinding discs. Hard as silicon carbide (carborundum) is, it falls far below the diamond in that respect. There is a demand for an abrasive which is cheaper than the diamond', yet approximately as hard. "Boron carbide, the hardest synthetic material ever made in commercial quantities, is the only product yet developed as a commercial abrasive which has a hardness intermediate between slicon car- j bide and the diamond," according to j Dr, Tone.
