Spaeking in the Concert Chamber when the result of the Mayoral contest was announced, Mr. Hislop said: — "I wish to thank every one of you for all you have done to secure my reelection as Mayor by a record majority, one, which ensures that for the next three years we are sure of safe, sound administration. "The election fight has been, tone of great interest, and for me great fun, because I like a fight. Mr. Chapman has fought a good, clean fight, and I have enjoyed having a battle against him. ' "Over 6000 of a majority of the people of Wellington have re-elected me to the position I still hold. I want to thank my committees who have worked so hard, and my wife for all she has don efor me in the past and in this campaign. For the next three years I shall devote myself, as in the past, to the. affairs of' the people of Wellington, to do all I cSn in their interests." 1 ' • ■ "WILL COME IN THE LONG RUN." "It is quite evident that the citizens of Wellington do .not yet desire a Labour Mayor," said Mr. Chapman, "i' desire to congratulate Mr. Hislop on the splendid victory he has achieved. I also wish to thank the 18,000 electors who gave me their votes. I have no. regrets with regard to this fight. It has been condupted in a very clean manner. "I, personally, and my colleagues have expounded tb the best of ' our ability Labour views. v The only regret is that we did not get a few thousand more votes. That will come in time. I giw my heartiest thanks to the various committees who worked on the party's behalf and assure them that, although Labour on this occasion did not win, it must come in the long run."
