OBITUARY
SIR ERNEST WREFORD
(Received May 11, 10.45 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The death occurred suddenly of Sir Ernest Wreford; one of Australia's best-known bankers, aged 71.
Sir Ernest Henry Wreford was born on December 17, 1866, and was educated at the North Adelaide Grammar School and several preparatory schools. He joined the staff of the National Bank of Australasia in Adelaide in 1882 and served at Coolgardie, Kalgoorlie, the London office of the bank, and Melbourne. He became chief manager in 1912 and was appointed to the directorate when he retired in 1935. He was chairman of the Associated Banks of Victoria from time to time, was a member of the Australian
and Victorian Red Cross committees and the Victorian War Loan Council during the war, a member of the council of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, and a foundation member of the Australian National Committee of the International Chamber of Commerce, and represented Australia at the first congress of the International Chamber at Brussels in 1925.. He was also a member of the council of the Victorian branch of the Royal Empire Society, and was chairman of the Lady Northcote Children's Emigration Fund for Australia. He married in 19 r l and leaves two sons and three daughters.
