WELLINGTON ESPERANTO CLUB

A very entertaining evening was held at the weekly -"meeting of the Wellington Esperanto Club on Monday. Mr. E. A. Hornblow presided. After the enrolment of new members the various classes had an hour of tuition under the guidance of experienced teachers. The programme period opened with an original sketch written by Mr. C. Toomer, D.B.E.A. He was ably assisted in its production by Mr. Ivan Quinlan. Mr. vernoh J. Leek, D.8.E.A.. spoke on the, value of Esperanto as an open sesame to the • literatxire of. various small - countries, most of which never reached the libraries of the world owing, to the cost and difficulty of translation. He gave a reading of an original article in Esperanto from a Dutch gazette depicting some of the unusual customs of that people. A confidence trickster's craft was cleverly portrayed by Mr. Frank Bailey, club treasurer, with the aid of his wife and Mr. W. Longhurst. Major McAllister and Mr.'R. D., Saunders greatly amused the very large gathering with an interpretation of Egyptian sorcery. The concluding item, presented by Mr. and Mrs. G. Blong and written by the former, proved to be a well-balanced and extremely original, description of the constabulary in an English village. Presentations/were made to Mrs. E. Beckingsale and Mr. Paul Tasker who are shortly leaving for -abroad. It was announced that a dance would be held next Monday.
