DRIVER FINED £5

HURRYING TO WEDDING

A fine of £5 and costs was imposed on William Orr, an employee of the Wellington City Council, when he was charged before Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Petone Court today, with driving in a manner which might have been dangerous to the public. Mr. G. Findlay entered a plea of guilty on the defendant's behalf.

Inspector A. C. Crawford, of the Transport Department, said that at 6 30 p.m. on April 14 he was proceeding south" down the Ngahauranga Gorge and was passing over the little bridge at the foot of the gorge when he met a line of oncoming 'traffic. The first car was already passing him when the car behind pulled out and came headon at him. He thought a head-on collision was inevitable, but managed to pull iri at the side and the collision was avoided by the narrowest possible margin. He turned round and followed this car, said the inspector, and the driver passed other cars in the gorge and went round bends on the wrong side. It was the worst case of driving he had come across in the gorge. When stopped the defendant said he was hurrying to a wedding. Mr. Findlay said that his client was hurrying to deliver some bouquets which had not arrived in time for his niece's wedding. He was an experienced driver. ' The Magistrate remarked that if there was much more of this type of driving in gorges he would have to impose cancellation of the licence.
