WOMEN'S INSTITUTES
PLEASANT AFTERNOON
A meeting of the Newlands Women s Institute was held in the schoolroom recently. Mrs. presided 6ver a good. attendance of A warm welcome was extended all, and two new; members were enrolled. Mesdames • Brownell and Ring were elected to attend the Federation Council meeting at the Hutt as delegates. It was decided to start an Arts and Crafts Circle, with Mrs. Corrwell as convener. Mrs. Petrie consented to be the librarian. There were ® n " tries for the competitions. That for baby socks was won by Mrs. Fraser, Mrs. Tunley being second. For tomato sauce, Mrs. Ring was first and Mrs. Fraser second. The cup will 'be held by Mrs. Ring for the month. - ; ' • An enjoyable social hour w a SSPMU' and afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Brownell.- Petrie, and Fraser. _ A very successful concert was held in the Parish Hall, Johnsonvule, by the members of the Newlands Women s Institute, - assisted by. the pupils of
Miss Hazel Martin. Delightful dances by little Joy Ring, Miss L. Kettlewell, and Miss M. Heketa were much enjoyed. "The Hill-billies" and "The Marines" and other items rendered by the Glee were much .appreciated. The Drama Circle put on two plays, "The Chimney Corner" and "Nearly, a Mormon," "The Chimney Corner" haying won first place at the Drama Festival held recently at the Hutt. For the success of the concert Mrs. Wood (pianist), Mrs. Kettlewell (glee convener), and Mrs. Ring (drama producer) were specially thanked for their services.
