AGREEMENT LIKELY

NEW YORK, May 8,
Britain and the United States are approaching agreement regarding the status of Canton and Enderbury Islands, with a prospect of an arrangement for joint jurisdiction, says the Washington correspondent of the "New York Times."
It is expected that a formal an-1 nouncement will be made soon of general terms, and that then detailed sup- j plementary collateral questions will be taken up, including the status of other small islands throughout the Pacific. Jurisdiction over these islands is an open question in view of the uncertainty surrounding their discovery. It is eventually intended to carry negotiations to the Antarctic area, later including other countries with interests in the areas under scrutiny.
