ATHLETIC V. WELLINGTON
The breeze was fresh from the north, but the ground was in first-class order when Wellington met Athletic at Hataitai. In the early part of the first spell, Wellington held the advantage and went close to scoring twice. Athletic later got the back division" working, and, with Hill and Pelham, showing good form, Wellington had to work hard on defence to prevent tries. Wellington also made advances, but their work had not the snap of that of th®ir opponents. Auld, full-back for Wellington, early showed his quality, and being given the chance of showing what he could do as a goal-kicker convinced onlookers of his worth by kicking three penalty goals, none of which was easy. Before the close of the first spell the Athletic backs brought off some excellent passing rushes, two of .which ended in Pope scoring tries, one being converted by Boddy. Early in the second spell, Athletic took the lead by means of a penalty goal by Boddy, and they continued to press. Eventually Wellington made desperate attempts to pull off a win, and some of the best football in the game was seen in the closing stages. However, time sounded with the score: Athletic 11, Wellington 9. Mr. A. Hooper was the referee.
