SENIOR FIXTURES

THE FIRST ROUND

The first-round fixtures for the senior grade Rugby football competitions in Wellington were decided upon at last night's meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union. The senior competition begins on Saturday, April; 30, Eastbourne and University, in accordance with the usual procedure of relegating the two teams with the poorest records in the second round of last year's senior competition, will begin the new season in second grade, while Johnsonville. who were promoted for the second round last year, remain in the first division. Following are the senior fixtures:— First Division. % Athletic v. Marist, Athletic Park. Hutt v. Poneke, Hutt. , Wellington v. Petone, Petone. College Old Boys v. Johnsonville, Johnsonville. Second Division. Eastbourne v. St. Patrick's Collegt Old Boys, Eastbourne; Oriental v. Athletic, Athletic Park (early match); Weilington v. Pirates, Wakefield Park: University v. Miramar. Polo Grounds. The meeting expressed sympathy with the suggestion that each, sport* body in the city should arrange an annual benefit match for the purpose of raising funds for the provision of additional sports facilities. , A letter on the subject was received from the Wellington City Council, and a special Wednesday match is to be arranged for a date later in the season. Proceeds from these matches will be pooled in a special fund and subsidised £1 for £1 up to an amount to be decided annually by the City Council. The scheme will be carried out provided legislation can be obtained for the council to set aside and control such a fund.

The Wellington Rugby Referees' Association forwarded a resolution car* ried at its annual meeting, asking the union if the referees' appointment board could be given the power to select referees for representative matches in Wellington. Messrs. J. S. King, B. Matthews, T. G. Taylor, arid A. D. Chant, it was stated, had been appointed to form a deputation which will meet the Rugby Union committee o n April 26. The following junior advisory committee was appointed:—Messrs. J. Thompson (Wellington), D. Chant (Oriental), W. S. Keegan (Upper Hutj;), W. R. King (Poneke), A. W. Cooper (Miramar), F. Bezzant (Athletic), D. Eckhoff (University), and C. S. Hogg (Onslow). ■~„„• -,i Senior B fixtures, for April 30 will be announced after next Tuesday night's meeting of the management1 committee. .
