NEW HILLMAN "14"

The new Hillman "14" is a five-seater car of a size and performance which so many motorists require. It seats five adults in comfort, and has engine power adequate to all conditions of load and road. The chassis has a system, of independent front-wheel suspension, which functions equally well at all speeds and over any type; of road surface, and it corners with an unusual feeling of stability. The rated 13.9 h.p. 4-cylinder side valve engine has been designed to provide smooth running with economy. No less than 51 b.h.p. is developed at 3600 r.p.m. A thermostat is fitted to provide accurate temperature control, which in conjunction with an automatic choke not only enables an instant start from cold with full power, but maintains the engine temperature at a point which provides the most efficient running. With 14-gallon tank, the car has a range of well over. 300 miles. The gear-box provides four forward speeds, all of which have synchromesh, so that no double declutching, even when changing down to first, is needed, and the indirect gears are remarkably quiet. The front wings, radiator, and bonnet are cushion mounted, free of the chassis and independent of road-jolt —a method that eliminates rattles and squeaks from the front end of the car. The coachwork of the Hillman "14" is in every way in keeping with the modern design and magnificent road performance of the chassis. In line and form it is both stylish and beautiful. The spare wheel is housed in the tail, in its own compartment, out of sight yet easily accessible. There is an efficient and simply operated system of draughtless ventilation, embodying panels in the front windows, hinged rear quarter lights, and scuttle ventilators. Special precautions have been taken to keep engine fumes from penetrating into the body. Excellent luggage accommodation is a feature of the new car. The locker will hold an unusual amount of luggage, including the longest golf clubs, with the lid shut, or, alternatively, the boot lid opens to form a luggage platform strong and big enough to carry a large trunk, and without external struts. Hide upholstery and arm-rest for driver and rear passengers are provided. The equipment includes selfcancelling direction indicators, twin balanced-tone electric horns, double electric windscreen wiper with the motor fitted under the bonnet, and independent blade control, attractive radiator mascot, stop light, and bumpers front and rear. Parcel spaces, cubby holes, and pockets are provided.
