The general public in Wellington has always given generous support to the Returned Soldiers' Association when Flanders poppies are sold to raise funds to help sick and disabled ex-
[servicemen, and as economic condi- | tions are now good the Wellington B.S.A. expects more sales than ever this year. Usually poppies are sold a few days before Anzac Day, but this year the date has been advanced and Thursday, April 14, will be poppy day in the city and suburbs. The reason for this is that the New Zealand contingent of returned soldiers to take part in the Anzac Day celebrations in Sydney will sail on April 19 and are to be given an opportunity to take their poppies with them.
Last April approximately 35,000 poppies were sold in the Wellington area, the association's relief fund benefiting to a considerable extent as the gross returns were £1474, an increase of £233 over the previous year. As there are no overhead expenses in connection with the sales and as all charges for poppies go to the disabled men who make them, the whole of the money collected went to returned soldiers in need of help.
