EXTRAORDINARY POSITION
The report of the City Engineer on the recent housing survey contains some extraordinary figures as to the shortage and unsatisfactory condition of dwellings and apartments in Wellington, but. no statement is more astonishing than this summary of the garage shortage in city and suburbs:— "The survey disclosed the fact that there are attached to private dwelling units in the city district 2191 motor garages,* in the inner suburbs 2810, and in the outer suburbs 1961, giving a grand- total of 6962. The present registration of motor vehicles in the city is 18,049.
"With private garaging accommodation for only 6962 motor vehicles it is a safe assumption to state'that a very large percentage of motor vehicles registered in this city remain on the streets,for. 24 hours of the day." •-;
