FIRE BRIGADES
WELLINGTON AWARD
PERIOD OF TWO MONTHS
The agreement reached in Conciliation Council to cover the wages and conditions of employment of the Wellington city and suburban fire brigades' employees was Gratified by the' Second Court of Arbitration today. ? . The only , question the , ; Court was^ asked to consider was the term of the award. Mr.'L.-Glover, on behalf of the men,' asked that the term be fixed, at t\yo month's to bring the award "Into conformity with' the Christchurch ?and Auckland) awards. The reason for this, he said, was that it was proposed, to institute Dominion proceedings. '
Mr. W. J. Mountjoy, who appealed for the employers, said he was not present at the latter stages of the conference which had followed the Conciliation Council proceedings. He personally was1- opposed to a short-term award, believing that no award should be made for, a period of less than one year, but as the parties had agreed to a'short term the Court could do nothing but respect the wishes of the 1 parties.
Mr. Justice Hunter pointed out that circumstances sometimes rendered it advisable to make a short-term award.
The Court made the term two months, the award to expire on May 31.
