ORATORY SPRINTS
FAST WORK AT AWAPUNI
(Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day.
The going was good at Awapuni yesterday morning, and there were a number of interesting gallops performed on the course proper, the flags being about twelve feet out from the rails.
, The Bigot, after a quiet beginning, covered six furlongs in lmin 20 3-ssec, after taking 40 2-ssec for the first three. He should give a good account of himself in the Halcombe Handicap at Feilding. Oratory, who had Silver River as a companion over seven furlongs, ran her first three furlongs in 39 2-ssec, and, with three furlongs to go, was a couple of lengths in front. She maintained her effort and was going along very smoothly at the finish to complete the full distance in lmin 32 3-5 sec. Oratory galloped without apparent effort, and Silver River's showing was quite satisfactory.
AN ATTRACTIVE EFFORT.
Laughing Lass ran her first two furlongs in 24 3-ssec, three in 36 3-ssec, and five in lmin 2sec. It was a nice effort, and she looks particularly well. Surmount was let off with a light task. He was restricted to threequarter pace until he reached the top of the straight, where he was speeded up to run the last two furlongs in -tt> Cher Ami, Great Legion, and Ecstatic were companions in an interesting "flutter" over half a mile. From a standing start they went away rather unevenly, but after taking. 15sec for the first furlong, they were in a bunch as they turned for home to be almost in line at the finish. Ecstatic and Cher Ami appeared .to be going teethe time for the half-mile heing 52' 3-ssec. Riotous, Forest Glow, and Fair Day were galloped a mile, running the fir^t three furlongs in 40 3-ssec and five in lmin 9 l-ssec. As soon as they enterea the home stretch Fair Day who had been in the rear, put in his claim and he beat the others by a head. It was a good effort on the part of the three horses, and they appear to be in good nlk^ r apEpfteam will be well split up at Easter, for he has horses for Auckland and Feilding, and Tangled is, to 6 o south for the Hiverton.
