The Minister of Labour,-Mr. Ernest Brown, pointed out in the House of Commons that the number, of people unemployed.for more than six months had been reduced to 279,000, which was a smaller figure than at any time during the past.four yc/ars. The remarkable recovery 'during; that period had broken almost every previous ■ record fbr the number.employed:"* Mr. Brown remarked that ■ a great public works', programme was being carried out by local authorities, public undertakings, arid Government departments at a cost of between £250,000,000 and £300,000,000. ' : .'. '
The Government's contracts for the defence programme to the end of January amounted to £344,708,700, of which £ 96,492,000. had. gone to the scheduled areas, he said. ' '
