RACING RIVALRY

BRISBANE'S RICH SPRINT

The richest sprint stake in Australia this season is to be the Doomben Newmarket Handicap, a straight six furlongs decided at the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club's Meeting in June, says an Australian report. A prize of 3000 guineas has been set aside for the race, which is evidence of the tremendous bounds racing has been making in Queensland since the passing of the drastic gaming legislation a couple of years ago. A fortnight ago the chairman of the Brisbane Amateur Turf Club (Mr. Ahem) secured the consent of the committee to make the Doomben Newmarket stake 3000 guineas. At the annual meeting of members of the club,' Mr. Ahem announced that the committee would givet a stake worth £3000 for the Doomben Newmarket. He told members that the club intended to stage the richest sprint race in Australia,

Some weeks later the Victoria Racing Club announced that the Flemington Newmarket this year was to be worth £3000. This action meant that the V.R.C. race would be at least equal in value to the Doomben race. The chairman of the 8..A.T.C, not to be outdone, secured the consent of his committee to make the Doomben Newmarket stake 3000 guineas (£3150).

The club decided that the Newmarket should be run on June 25. and the Doomben Cup, £2000, on July 2.
