AN ATTRACTIVE WIN
GALLEON'S CUP SUCCESS
(Special to the "Evenlnfl Post.")
DUNEDIN, March 24.
The performance of Galleon was one of the niost pleasing witnessed at Oamaru, for- he won the Cup easier than his winning margin may indicate. He was ridden a perfect race by L. J. Ellis, who moved up from second last to be third to Rebel Lad and High. Glee as they turned for home. He quickly had the measure of the leaders, and was not extended once he hit the front. It is almost certain now that he will go on with his Great Autumn engagement. The former North' Islander Flame Queen opened her account by an easy win in the .Trial Stakes. This was her' third start since going to Riccarton to be trained by S. Barr. She led all the way, and responded when called on for a final effort in the straight. Netherlea's chances in • the race were not helped by drawing No. J4 at the barrier. He had to go fast to get a position, and was second in the first furlong to the winner. The effort told over the final furlong, and he just got third from Steer Clear, a likely improver. Superex could have won the Autumn Highweight by much more than he did at the finish. He was slow away, but with three furlongs to go moved up behind the leaders, Drink Up and Darecourt, and in the straight he easily ran past them. McHeath came home well, but was allowed to get too far out of his ground, and was giving the winner a big start into the straight. Stratosphere dropped dead after pulling up in the Oamaru Cup. He was out in front in the early stages. High Glee had every chance, but Mungatoori and Linguist both finished too strongly for him.
I Silver Streak again demonstrated | that he races best after a let-up he easily accounted for the Stewards Handicap. He ran right away from the field over the last 100 yards. Haughty Winner came, on again after yielding the lead along the back, but had no chance of catching Silver Streak. Roseman, considering he was left, finished [an excellent third. Double Gift had I every chance, being second until the last furlong. Cocksure won the Parkside Hack jn a manner that suggests another success at the meeting. His victory gave L. J. Ellis his third win for the day. New Note attempted to lead all the way, but first Cocksure and then Glenacre headed him in the run home. However, he ran very creditably, it being his first outing for some months, and he also drew 'wide out. . ' ,' P. T. Hogan, owner of Bellerive, lodged a complaint--after the Windsor Hack, in which his horse was engaged, for the starter allowing Dracula, the i winner, to begin from No. 2 instead of from No. 7. After an inquiry, the starter, Mr. C. Gieseler, was.' warned that he. must dispatch the horses from their correct positions. After the Stewards'^ Handicap,,D. McDonald also complained of the start which Roseman received, the trainer, considering that the horse was not given fair treatment. The judicial committee were to have held an inquiry after the last race*
