LONDON, March 23

The total tonnage of shipping which passed through the Suez Canal in 1937 was 28,559;935, compared with 27,999,836 tons in 1936, constituting a record, even allowing for the abnormal traffic dua to. the Abyssinian war.

The tonnage increased from the .spring of 1936 to a maximum in April, 1937. The percentage of British shipping of the total was 47.28 in 1937 and 49 per cent, in the last quarter of the year. *
