TWO BATHERS SAVED
Caught in a tide rip at Wainui Beach, Gisborne on Sunday, two men, Mr. Arthur Monk and Mr. Ray Farn, were being swept out into deep water when they were rescued by members of the Wainui Surf Life-saying Club (states a Gisborne correspondent). Mr. Monk was in a serious condition when reached by the beltma# but responded to resuscitation methods. The plight of the" two bathers was first noticed by the man on duty in the watch tower, and, in response to a signal, the team jumped to action smartly,. Mr. Leo Clark taking' out the belt. Mr. Farn was supporting his companion, who was unable to swim, and they were being tossed about in the angry surf. Both men were exhausted, however, when Mr. Clark reached them, and Mr. Farn had lost his grip on Mr. Monk, the latter being at the mercy of the.current. In order to save time • three other club members' waded out and took over from the beltman to avoid |he necessity of the patient being hauled through the surf to the beach and suffering further from immersion." Mr. Monk suffered from shock and had taken in a quantity of water. Resuscitation methods were applied, and three-quarters of an hour later he was able to return'home. Mr. Farn soon recovered. V :
