WHARF WORK
BOARD'S EXEMPTION CLAIM
"The Increased wages provided for in the waterside workers' new agreement operated from February 18,1937," says the annual report of the Wel-
| lington Harbour Board. "The general : rate of wages was increased from 2s 4d to 2s 8d per hour, and was made retrospective to October 1, 1936. Increases were also made for handling special j classes of cargo, and these were granted back to October 1, 1936.' The new rates and conditions include the payment of time and a quarter for Saturday morning work. The new agreement has not yet been made into an award of the Arbitration Court, as one or two clauses require further consideration, particularly clause 54 (application df: award), which, in its present formy is not acceptable to the Wellington Harbour Board, as it affects the right of the tboard to employ its permanent hands on wharf work, a practice that has obtained on the Wel-
lington wharves since the board was constituted. The board is claiming; therefore; that the clause as it appeared In the last award, exempting such employees, should be reinserted by, the Court in the new award."
