FOOD IN BRITAIN

PRICE INCREASES LAST '

YEAR

(Received March 23*, 10.50 a.m.)

LONDON^ March 22. A report by the Council of the Food (Defence Plans) Department states that food prices increased more during the year ended December 1, 1937, than during the two previous .years. The combined price index was 46 per cent, above that of 1914. The greatest increases were in respect to bread, cheese, sugar, margarine, meat, and butter.

The report states that the rises have aroused considerable concern, but that the recovery from the depression inevitably meant a rise in prices.
