MILDER TEMPERATURES

Special forecast for Wellington:— Light north-easterly to northerly winds, freshening gradually. Weather fair to cloudy and milder. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate north-easterly to northerly winds, freshening later about and south of Cook Strait. In eastern districts of the South Island the weather will be fine, but elsewhere it will be cloudy to overcast, with scattered light rain in the North Island, but will improve. Unsettled conditions, however, will develop tomorrow in trie western and far southern districts of the South Island. Temperatures will be milder. The weather over the Dominion is still controlled by an anticyclone of considerable intensity. The centre of this has moved in a north-easterly direction since yesterday, and is now to be north of the Chatham Islands, where pressure at 9 a.m. today was 30.4 inches. Cool and cloudy weather has prevailed, buf; there was an improvement this morning over the South Island. From the far north scattered light rains have been reported, and rain was still falling this morning* in many places. Southerly to southeasterly wjnds predominated yesterday, but by this morning they had almost everywhere changed to north-easterlies, their force being mainly light. Although cloudy, Auckland's weather has been fine and warm; Winds yesterday were variable in direction, becoming south-easterly during the afternoon. Winds this morning were turning to the north-east. It was still cloudy in Wellington yesterday, but thei'e was some improvement in the weather. A cold breeze of, moderate force blew during the day, but since 9 p.m. it has been practically calm. One hour of bright sunshine was recorded, and the maximum and minimum v temperatures were 60.9 and 55.1 degrees respectively. It was again overcast this morning and occasional light rain fell. In Christchurch it was overcast and cool, but otherwise fine, with a northeasterly breeze. In Dunedin also it was cloudy to overcast and cool, with a north-easterly breeze. '
