CIGARETTE END SWALLOWED

HASTINGS, March 22,

The death of- a ten-months-old Maori child as the result of swallowing a cigarette end was the subject o£ an inquest at Wairoa yesterday. Before it was taken ill on Saturday the child was crawling round the floor of its home, and it is thought possible that it picked up a butt. Unsuccessful attempts were made by the mother to get the butt out. On . Monday the child was admitted to Wairoa Hospital, where it died shortly afterwards.

The verdict at the inquest was that death was due to pneumonia brought about by swallowing a cigarette end.
