NOTABLE TENOR WEDS

BRIDE A GIFTED PIANIST

(From "Tho Post's" Representative.) LONDON, February 23.

Two musical families were united in London on February 19, when Miss Edith Elizabeth Page, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Page, of South Norwood, was married to Mr. Hubert Carta, the celebrated New Zealand tenor, son of the late Mr. Charles Carter and Mrs. Hall-Smith (formerly Mrs. Nellie Carter), of Auckland. The ceremony took place at St. Luke's Church, Wdodside, Croydon. The best man was Mr. Wainwright Morgan, the New Zealand pianist.

The bride was given away by her father. Her wedding gown, worn at the evening reception which followed the wedding ceremony, was of gold lame satin with a spray of red carnations. The same flowers adorned her small gold muff, and the red. note was picked up again in her gold and garnet earrings.

The reception, which was held in the Hall of India at the Overseas League, was the occasion of a very delightful programme of music. The bridegroom sang several solos, accompanied by his bride on the piano, and also a number of duets with Mrs. Wainwright Morgan (formerly Miss Menetta Marriott), the Australian soprano, with Mr. Morgan at the piano. Mr. Carta especially delighted his listeners with a group of Maori songs, and Mrs. Carta, herself a gifted pianist, gave several items. Miss Stella Murray also sang.

The music was followed by dancing, in which about 200 guests, including many New Zealanders, took part.

The guests included Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Marriott, Mr. and Mrs. Wainwright Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Lance Fairfax, Dr. and Mrs. J. Kemble, Mrs. Dorothy Ashford, Mrs. Alan Mitchell, Madame Evans Williams, Madame Esta D'Argo, Miss Stella Murray, Miss Nelle Scanlan, Miss Eileen Driscoll, Miss Essie Ackland, Miss, Ashlord, Miss Alma McGruer, and Miss Christina Young.

: Mr. Carta, who was born in Auckland in 1898, commenced his career as a boy soprano at the age of seven.' As he grew older, his voice did not actually break,' but with added years the quality of tone changed to that of tenor. His professional debut was made in Rossini's "Moses in Egypt" in 1918, and after this was in great demand by all the leading musical societies in New Zealand. He opened a studio in Palmerston North in 1922, but two years later came to London, where, within six months of his arrival, he sang at the Royal Albert Hall, Queen's Hall, and Alexandra Palace. There quickly followed a series of over 150 concerts, operas, and oratorios, and a two-year contract with the 8.8.C. .

Returning to New Zealand in 1927, he opened a studio in Wanganui, and in 1931 settled in Christchurch, singing repeatedly at concerts and- over the air. Mr. Carta returned to London in 1934 to resume his successful career abroad. He has sometimes used the professional name of Edgar Zelano, and recently changed his surname from Carter to Carta.., ....

As Miss Elizabeth Page, Gold Medallist, L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., Mrs. Carta was a very well-known pianist. .She was formerly principal music mistress of Claremont Girls' School, Esher, and has toured as solo pianist in America, South Africa, and Australia, Mr. and Mrs. Carta plan to make their future home at Brook- Green, Hammersmith. ~.'.■ V ! ■

Faggoting is an old craft which can make a modern dress look most charming. For instance, the slim girl will be glad to note that faggoting", following the line of pointed-top, sleeves, gives a broad-shouldered look to her frock. '•...■■'
