RIOTOUS UNLUCKY
PAEROA DOUBLE MISSED
(Special from "Early Bird.") AUCKLAND, March 22. Kiotous should never have been beaten on the opening day at Paeroa last week. Allowed a pound for a half-head defeat he reversed the placings with Mio Lume on Saturday. His fencing each day was by no means perfect, and, like many other visiting horses, he perhaps found this course tricky, despite the easy fences. A totalisator turnover of just on £69,000 at the Ohinemuri Meeting was an excellent result, for there were many incidents that held up betting. There was the fire in the new stand and the Rulette affair on the opening day, while on Saturday the pay-out in the hurdle race was held up for over two races before finality was reached in the charge of interference against the winner, Celtic Lad. Glen Abb's effort in winning " the Hack Cup on Thursday was full ol merit, and, as he went another line race on the second day, it is probable that he will have to be taken into account in open handicap company m future. His one win at. Paeroa was sufficient to lift him out of the hack class, and he may now compensate his owner, Mr. A. H. Long, for having leased his other horse, Sir Abb, a winner earlier in the month at the Franklin Meeting. SURPRISING DIVIDEND. Abbey Lass, the big dividend payer at Paeroa on Saturday—a win price of over three-quarters of a century, and a place return of well on to a score—had run a fine race in similar company at Pukekohe a fortnight previously, finishing fifth, and on Thursday last she was going well in the first two furlongs, when she was sent back. It was astonishing under the circumstances' that her price should have been so big. She won very easily, giving none of her opponents a chance. She is still eligible for the trials at Tauranga nebit weekend. King Key's effort in winning the Ohinemuri Cup was a brilliant one. He was fairly well back early, but six furlongs from home he improved his position and he was gradually making up his leeway along the back. At the half-distance King Key, wide out, Round.Up, in centre, and Tybalt, rails, were in line, and they finished in that order at neck intervals. King Rey paid a double-figure win dividend, for it was not considered that with his 9.0 he would be seen to advantage on this course. He is engaged at Tauranga, but he may now wait for the Auckland fixture. Round Up was not well placed shortly after the start of the Ohinemuri Cup and his rider rode him hard up the straight the first time tlil he was with the leaders. He maintained this position throughout and it was only the using "up of so much energy early that deprived him of success. On Saturday he was always handy, and he scored decisively over Dark Shadow to pay a surprisingly good dividend. He will next be seen at Ellerslie at Easter. AMONG OPEN SPRINTERS. Llangollen made her debut among the open sprinters and handicap company at the Ohinemuri fixture and she ran two very fine races. She was beaten decisively by Rulette on the first day and then received the decision when her conqueror was disqualified. On the second day she contested the nine furlongs handicap and she finished fourth. She was prominent most of the way but lost her place crossing the top. It' was an impressive debut in the company and she may go well if produced at Tauranga. The two-year-olds seen out at Paeroa were by no means strong, and the dual winner, Noitaro, was easily the best. She finished strongly on the first day to score narrowly. On Saturday the best-backed division were not too well served at the start, Noitaro being back with them. However, she quickly ran through and had the field beaten inside the distance. She is furnishing into a nice filly arid she should be more than useful next season. She takes after her sire, Oration, in some respects, although she has not the great burst of speed that horse could produce at times. Milanion went well in the two-year-old event on Thursday and might have been difficult to beat had he made the home turn better. On the second day he was one of the sufferers by a slow getaway. Pocket Venus, who is very fast, was in similar case, and so too was Shadow Queen, who shows promise. On the first day Pocket Venus carried 7.9J instead of the minimum weight, and she had to pay for this when she finished second. Vitement once again proved himself a moderate galloper, Solitary revealed a lot of pace and no stamina, and Gay Hussar proved disappointing. Silver Cloud is a likely improver who may show up at Tauranga.
