TRENTHAM'S DOZEN
MANAWATU RACES
SUNEE'S HURDLING DEBUT
(By "Rang-atira.")
A dozen or so Trentham hbrses will be making the trip to the Manawatu Racing Club's Meeting on Friday and Saturday, and they should not return without some of the prize-money. The horses going are fit as a result of their preparation for and racing at last week's meeting, and they have therefore required little serious galloping this week. Most of the work yesterday and this morning'was of a serviceable nature.
The weather both yesterday, and today was dull, with occasional showers. The plough track is out of service.
The only visiting horses still at Trentham are L. Butler's pair, Auto Sweep and Windsoreen. On closer inspection Auto Sweep impressed greatly. He has not done it right since his surprise second at Trentham last winter, but he looks sure to repeat that form again some day, and probably over a distance of ground. This Captain Bunsby three-year-old somewhat resembles, his half-brother, Cottesmore, and he bears the Limond qualities, which he has inherited from his dam, the Limond mare Crubeen.
J. W. Lowe and J. McCauley left today for Awapuni with Sunee and Good Sun and with Siegmund and Laggard respectively. Sunee was schooled with Red Sun yesterday, and though he finished well behind his mate he gave a satisfactory exhibition over five fences. He will be ridden by A. Sagar, who has the distinction of having won with the only two mounts he has yet had and who will be making his debut as a hurdle horseman. Sunee incidentally will also be having his first race over fences. The rest of the horses for the first day's racing at Awapuni, including Auto Sweep and Windsoreen, will depart tomorrow. T. R. George is satisfied with the progress Alunga and Galteemore have made, but he is taking Floral_ Robe mainly to educate, her, as she is very green. Drachma is unlikely to go, as the field looks too strong. Trebor may be sent up for the second day's racing. • H. B. Lorigan will have. Roaming and Dancing Flame at the meeting, H. Telford is taking Sigurd, Debham, and Accomplice (second day only), and W. J Wood will be represented by Arctic King and Twilight Song. All these horses are well. Their work since the meeting last week has been of an easy nature. Southern Blood is not an acceptor for the first day, but he has benefited so much with his racing last week that he is now likely to be on.hand for the second day's hurdles, if a satisfactory riding engagement can be made. Additional riders for the meeting are:—S. Wilson, Arctic King, Oratory, Majority, Russian Ballet, and Baldric; W Doyle, Nereus; A. E. Bennet, Lucullus Lad, Alunga, and Floral Robe; L. J. Ellis, Galteemore and Royal Chief; B H Morris, Brazen King and Smoke Screen; C. Goulsbro', Good Sun; P. Atkins, Debham; W. J. Broughton, Siegmund and Dancing Flame; G. R. Tattersall, Roaming. No rider has yet been secured for Sigurd, nor for Auto Sweep or Windsoreen. Debham will again have to be ridden overweight. Lucullus Lad, with the benefit of a 71b apprentice allowance, will have his weight reduced to 7.1.
