CHAMPION RINKS

NEWTOWN ON TOP

After one of the most exciting games seen in a championship final for | many years, the champion rink of the j Newtown Bowling Club became^thc champion of champions of the rinks in the Wellington Bowling Centre yesterday afternoon. The Newtown and Johnsonville champions reached the final, and although the latter rink was drawn from the smaller club, the Newtown players, after securing an early lead, had to play their best to win the match. The game was played on the Hataitai green, and was watched by a fairly large "bank." The players were:'— Newtown.—Culley, Ewing, Webster, Johnsonville.—Hogg, Offord, Mills, Jacobs (s). . . ... Johnsonville opened the scoring with a 3, but Newtown then took the lead, getting in a pair and three singles. Johnsonville had four in on the sixth •end, but Russell drew the shot and scored 1. On the next end Johnsonville had five in, but Russell again drew the shot. Newtowh scored two on the eighth, but Johnsonville held one on the next, and Jacobs drew, a second, making the score 9-5. Johnsonville made the tenth end a long one, but Newtown got four in before the skips went to the mat.. Russell added a fifth, but Jacobs, drew close in and saved two, the score then being 12-5 in Newtown's favour. The eleventh end was also a long one, and Hussell killed it when trying to cut out a Johnsonville bowl. The next end was nearly a "triple toucher," the jack being surrounded. Johnsonville scored one. Newtown had three on "the next end, but Webster knocked a bowl in and Johnsonville scored one. Newtown put the jack in' the ditch at the next end, but Johnsonville scored one from the screen and reduced Newtowa's lead to 12-8. Johnsonville scored one on the fourteenth end, but Newtown retaliated with one on the fifteenth, only to have Johnsonville come up another point on the next. However, Newtown claimed one on the seventeenth, but Johnsonville put the jack.in the ditch on the eighteenth and scored two, reducing Newtown's lead to 14-12. Johnsonville had two in oh the.nineteenth, but Webster cut one out. Russell then ran the jack back, but it rested, giving Johnsonville two, 'and the scored reached 14-all with two ends to play. The twentieth was played "with a close watch on all eventualities. Newtown got several in, but Jacobs ran the jack back and reduced his loss to one. The Johnsonville lead, scored a toucher with his first bowl.on-, the twenty-first, but the Newtown second ran it, back and then drew the shot. Webster drew a second, but Mills Knocked the shot bowl on and rested a foot from the jack. Jacobs came down a little too strong and tapped Mills's bowl into the ditch, giving Newtown the shot. With his last bowl Jacobs ran the jack into the- ditch, but Newtown held-the shot and won by two points, the final score being JL6-14. At the conclusion of the game Mr. M. J. Casey, the centre, president, congratulated the winners on tKe honour they had secured, and" the runners-ub on the fight they had made in the1 final.
