THE FLOWER GARDEN
Keep all beds well'forked over and. free from weeds. ' Remove all spent annuals. After working; ,over,, the soil and manuring -or-liming as required, vacant plots may be planted with seeding, stocks, Iceland poppies, cr other hardy plants. ■ If not already' done the planting of spring-flowering bulbs should be-pushed, on. The ground should be well prepared by deep digging, the ■ incorporation of well-rotted humus and wood ashes. A light dressing 'of- bonedust "may 'be given to. the Surface soil before planting. , Lawns should receive attention. Remove dandylions, daisies, docks, plantains, and other perennial weeds, as these will not die with cutting.' After the weeds are removed the lawn may be topdressed with good fine soil in which is incorporated one part superphosphate and -two parts basic slag. The manures should work out « .at loz super and 2oz slag per square yard. THE VEGETABLE GARDEN Harvest potatoes and onions and when properly dry store in dry ' shed. • Plant cabbages, cauliflowers, and silver beet., Sou^ spinach, turnips, lettuces, and onions. Regularly pick beans as this encourages the plants to continue to produce. Water the plants if the weather is dry.; Dig over all vacant plots and either manure or lime as required. Frequently cultivating between the rows of seedling crops gives the young plants a wonderful stimulus. Thin out as soon as practicable. Continue to. earth up celery. Remove any decaying leaves and sucker growths before applying the soil. Remove old pea plants which have finished and gather up and store away the sticks for next season. Burn1 any material'which is infested with mildew or other disease. The rest may be.utilised for digging in.
