COLD DREDGE SINKS
(By Teleprrnnll—H'fis? Association.)
GREYMOUTH, March 9,
The Stafford gold dredge, about eight miles north of Hokltika, sank in 20 feet of water in three minutes, early this evening. Although the actual cause has not yet been defined, it is believed that the bow came in. contact with a submerged log, and it is thought the front was stove in.
Three men on shift, Messrs. S. de Fillipi, W. Routham, and J. Routham, were forced to make hurried escapes by the gangway. The dredge is; lying on its side in the dam, and refloating her will be a big task,-probably necessitating emptying the dam. • The Stafford dredge has been owned and operated by an Australian company for the last four years, producing excellent returns. It is one of the smallec type- o£ electrically-operated dredges on the West Coast Fourteen employees are affected by its being put out of action. •. ' .
