TRACK CYCLING
CHAMPIONSHIP CONTESTS
On Saturday at the Petone Oval the Wellington Centre o£ the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association'will conduct the 1938 tractf cycling provincial championships. Last year they were held at the Kilbirnie Stadium, and the successful competitors were as follows: —1000 metres sprint, R. Loader (Poneke); 1000 metres'time trial, Len Sowerby (Nelson) and R. Loader (Poneke); 10-milc human paced, G. Amey (Port Nicholson) and T. Langley (Nelson); half-mile junior, T. Walsh (Poneke); one mile B grade, R. Evans (Poneke). R. Loader and G. Amey will not be riding' in this year's contests, but among the competitors will be several riders who missed the 1937 contests. Heading these arc : Ron Ulmer (New Zealand Empire Games representative) land Tom Roe, of Petone. Roe was conisidered a little unlucky in not being selected for the Games. At Wanganui on Saturday, in an attempt on the New Zealand one mile track,record, he missed by only one second on1 a night when a sharp, fitful breeze made his task-more arduous. Eight Nelson riders will add a good deal of interest to the racing. . ' • ■•' ;■■■•■ A cyclist well known to Petone people for his consistent' riding -in the past two races from Palmerston North' to. Petone is J. Burns (Nelson), who is expected to extend the present junior champion, T. Walsh, in the' half-mile junior title event. ■ .; . • A three-mile flat race is to be^conducted by the Hutt Valley Athletic and Harrier Club,, and in this about twenty runners are expected to start.
