CHAMPION PAIRS
KARORI AND HATAITAI IN
FINAL
The semi-finals of the champion of champion pairs of the Wellington Bowling Centre were played at the Kelburn Bowling Club's green this morning in ideal weather. The winners were the Karori pair, W. H. Thorn and H. D. Field (s), who defeated Hutt, S. Muter and F. S. Hewers (s), by 20 to 13, and the Hataitai pair, J. Donald and W. A. Wellings (s), who accounted for Otaki, A. Capewell and C. P. Grey (s), by a similar margin. The final is being played this afternoon. Both games this morning were well contested, and produced bowls of a high standard. The feature of the game between Karori and Hutt was.the fine Recovery made by Hutt after being down 15-6 at the, eleventh head. Excellent play by the Karori lead, a veteran of 72 years, and a consistent spell by the skip saw Hutt's total advance, and at the nineteenth head the score was 17-13, giving Hutt a good fighting chance. Through a bit of bad luck, the Hutt skip took his counting bowl out, and left Karori one up on the twentieth head, and on the final head Karori registered two, giving them the game by a margin of seven points.
In the other game Hataitai established an early, lead, and on the ninth head had a six-point margin over Otaki. The country pair had a good run after that, and at the tenth head the score was ■ 10-8 in Hataitai's favour. Hataitai came again at the seventeenth head, and regained a six-point margin—16-10. At, the twentieth the score was 18-13, and a two on the final head made the score 20-13 in Hataitai's favour.
