PORT NICHOLSON WIN

TRAMWAYS BAND THIRD

(.pedal to the "Ev.nlng Post.")

| PALMERSTON N., This Day. With two outright wins in the A grade tests, the Port Nicholson Band won the New Zealand A grade band championship last evening. The playing was of a very high standard throughout, and both Wellington bands added prestige to the city by gaining a first and a third in the championship. Last evening the test was "Romeo and Juliet," an arrangement of Gounod's opera. The work entailed artistic treatment on the part of the conductors and the correct atmosphere was retained throughout by the Wellington band. Port Nicholson drew No. 1- position, and with its rich tonal quality set. a very high standard for the following competitors. Although the late champion band, Wanganui Garrison, was absent, it is questionable whether it could have defeated the Wellington band, as Port Nicholson had a margin of six points on the first test, and was four points ahead of the second band last evening. The Wellington Tramways Band was lighter in tonal volume than Port Nicholson, but played exceptionally well all the same. Its interpretation of the work was most artistic, and the, fact that the Wellington bands were first and third in the championship speaks well for band music in the Capital City. The A and B grade quickstep contests are being held this afternoon, and the result will be announced in the "Sports Post." The Wanganui band has decided to return to Palmerston North to compete in this .event. The scores of the competing bands were:— A GRADE TESTS. Aggregate. Port Nicholson Silver (Mr. J. J.
