The only French entrant for this year's Grand National Steeplechase at Liverpool is Takvor Pacha, a six-year-old chestnut gelding by Mazeppa II who has won over two miles and five furlongs at Auteuil. He is owned by the Marquis de San-Miguel. Previous winners of the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, Golden Miller, Reynoldstown (twice), and Kellsbro' Jack, though still on deck, were not accorded a nomination for this year's race. Although Synagogue has not achieved success in India comparable to that of Martara and Kahapa, his name' figures in the minor places at meetings during the past two months. Steve Donoghue has registered the, colours "Primrose and blue hoops"' under National Hunt Rules, says an English exchange. Sky Pilot, who had to be turned out following a mishap in the Wellington Steeplechase last July, has not fully recovered from his trouble, and he is to be left out for another year.
W. S. Ellis, a son of the Invercargill trainer F. W. Ellis, scored his first win when he scored on his father's representative, Mona's Song, in the Novice Stakes at Winton. He followed it up by winning the Winton Cup on Amelita.
Ardchoille raced below expectations at Winton, and his trainer is of the opinion that he has not completely recovered from the rick he sustained before the Dunedin Meeting. He is to be let up for a time. D. Cotton has been giving Kinnoull a lot of useful work of late, and the Pink Coat horse has done well on the treatment. He will be got ready for the Great Easter Handicap and the Challenge Stakes at the Canterbury Jockey Club's Easter Meeting. A yearling colt by Winning Plit from Dutch Money, bred and owned by Mr. George Gould, has been taken in hand by F. Roberts at Riccarton. The trainer also has Yale, an elder halfbrother, in the stable. The latter is owned by Mr. D. Gould. Mercenary, owned by Mr. H. D. Greenwood, has been retired to the stud. She was a winner at Oamaru at New Year, but disappointed in her later efforts. By Paper Money from Egotism, Mercenary Us only three years old. and she should do. well as a matron. , . . Royal Ace, who made the trip from Takanini to Wanganui, possesses a torrent of early speed. He is by the former Stonyhurst stallion The Ace, sire .of Fast Passage, Waterline, etc., and who is now in the Auckland district. . .
F. McHugh, who is now training at Marton. was warmly congratulated when Brazen .King afforded him his first training success in the Wanganui Clip on Thursday.
