ST, ANDREWS CHURCH

98TH ANNIVERSARY

The ninety-eighth anniversary, services of St. Andrew's Church, TheVTej-? race, tomorrow will be of speciaß__i<!' tei-est, as St. Andrew's is the mother church of Presbyterianism in New Zealand. There is some doubt as'to where the first service was held. The late Mr. T. Lindsay Buick was of the opinion that February 26 marked the date of the first Presbyterian service in New Zealand, but the papers of-the Rev. John Macfarlane, who arrivedlby the Bengal Merchant and who was the first minister to be attached to a,ny congregation in Wellington, indicate that a service was held on February 23, either on board the Bengal Merchant or on the Petone Beach. It is certain that a service was held on Petone Beach on the ■ following Sunday (March 1).

At the services tomorrow the Psalms and paraphrases used at the first* service will be sung. The Scriptural passages will be read from, the Rev. Mr. Macfarlane's Bible, and at the morning service the Rev. A. B. Kilroy will preach from the 137 th Psalm, which inspired the thought for the sermon-de-livered at the first service.
