COUNTRY HOLIDAY
"I have just, come back -from a holiday in OJiau.' Every morning my sister and I.'would help milk the cows. We usetl to have a cup of warm, frothy milk straight from the cow. We used to separate the milk, and we made butter. I used to make butter balls and shells in the dairy after the butter was made. It was fun, though it was hard work churning. There was a pump at the farm, and the water was icy and very delicious. "In the orchard were pears, apples, plums, lemons, grapes, apricots, nectarines, and peaches. We found birds' nests in rthe apricot tree and there ' were baby birds in them but we didn't disturb them. - "One night we went eeling, and it was fun. We caught one big eel, which we cooked on a fire and ate. It was delicious. Twice we went trawling at the Ohau Beach. We caught thirty-six flounders and other fish. We dug for toheroas and cooked them on a big fire. We made toast and tea. There were twenty-four of us altogether, so it was very jolly." "THISTLEDOWN" (14). .. Lyall Bay.
