A THRILLING DAY

The New Zealand women's cricket team was present-at the opening o£ the Empire Games in Sydney, and there were no others more enthusiastic than the members of the team in cheering Matthews on to victory in that great runner's first achievement—the winning of the three miles. "It was a marvellous race, and we were all thrilled," said Mrs. D. Simons, the manager, on the cricket team's return from Australia yesterday. "Some of our girls were at school with Boot, and it was thrilling, too, to see him and Allen win their heats of the 880 yds. We were so thrilled that we wished we could stay for the rest of the Games." Mrs. Simons also mentioned that Messrs. McCormick and Kitto showed the members of the cricket team around the Empire village.
