WAIHI'S DELUGE
A RECORD RAINFALL Doubt has been expressed in some quarters as to the truth of the statement that Waihi last -Friday recorded a rainfall of 16.5 inches in twenty-four hours. Reports now to hand at the Meteorological Office .show that this statement was correct. The rainfall was torrential, and the fall easily beat the previous record of 12.15 inches which was recorded in March, 1910. Waihi and the surrounding district is subject to heavy rainfalls, but Friday's downpour was something quite beyond the ordinary. The simple answer of a small eight-year-old Maori boy caused considerable amusement in.the Auckland Supreme Court on Monday (states the "New Zealand Herald"). Counsel for an accused man doubted whether the boy understood the meaning of the word "cardigan," and sought to test his knowledge. "Suppose I asked you to go and buy me a cardigan," he said, "what would you bring me back?" The boy thought for a moment and then replied quietly, "A cardigan."
