TASMAN AIR SERVICE
WELLINGTON AS TERMINAL
LYTTELTON ADVOCACY
"I think the time is opportune for the Lyttelton Harbour Board to support Wellington ■in its claim as the trans-Tasman airport, and also to urge-the claims of Lyttelton at least for direct passenger and mail flights from Sydney, when a full load of passengers is offering direct to Lytteltbn," stated the chairman of the Lyttelton HarboUr Board, Mr. R. T. McMillan, in a report submitted to the board yesterday. .■■..> -
"Flights to and from Wellington," he added, "have demonstrated that large seaplanes or flying-boats ■ can safely use and be accommodated 'in the harbour, and, although no public final pronouncement has yet .been made by the Government or Imperial Airways,' signs are not wanting that Auckland may be selected as the terminal for the England-Australia-New Zealand service. ..
"The policy of the board has been to keep pace with the time. Sea-borne transport is now meeting air-borne competition, and the Port of Lyttelton should seek and be prepared to accept the new business." , - ■■■.-•
In reference to the visit of the Centaurus, Mr. McMillan said he understood that Captain J.W.; Burgess had told the harbourmaster that the moorr ing at Lyttelton was entirely satisfactory and the best provided so far in New Zealand.
The report was adopted.
