HELPING SOLDIERS
LADIES' AUXILIARY FORMED
Lieut-Colonel- G. Mitchell presided at a meeting of the Wellington branch of the Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League held yesterday. . There were also present Lieut-Colonel J. G. Roache, Mr. O. L. T. Harrison, Mr. C. O. Bell, Mr. W. E. Leadley (Dominion organiser),, and Major L. V* Porteous (secretary). ■ ,
The Dominion organiser reported that 120 unemployed disabled soldiers had been interviewed during the month, and that fourteen had been placed in constant employment with Government Departments and public bodies. He found that most of the men desired the opportunity to work rather than live on pensions. It was decided to send deputations to. the Employers' Association,' the Manufacturers' Association, . and the Chamber of Commerce, with a view to securing more suitable work for partially disabled ex-soldiers.
. It was reported that a successful sale had been held at the Disabled Soldiers' Shop in Farish Street, receipts' for. December being greatly in excess of those for the corresponding month of last; year.. , If was decided that a ladies auxiliary of the league be formed. The following were appointed foundation-mem-bers of; the auxiliary with power to add to their number: Mrs. DennistounWood . (Thorndon), Mrs., G., A. King (Kelburn), Mrs. C. Haslett (Miramar), Mrs E. W. Lamberg (Kilbirnie), Mrs. J A. Lavett and Mrs. M. I. Bunny r(City). The auxiliary will meet next week to elect its officers, and discuss plans for future activities.
