INTOXICATED DRIVER
TWO WEEKS IN PRISON
Fourteen days' imprisonment was the penalty imposed upon William Philip Jones, ' a dog catcher and labourer, aged 32, who appeared before Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court. today charged with being found intoxicated in charge of a motorcar on the Hutt Road. His driving licence was suspended, and he was prohibited from obtaining another for a further period of 12 months.,
Sub-Inspector. D. A. /McLean prosecuted, and Mr. A. J. Mazengarb appeared for the accused. At about 5.45 p.m. yesterday, said Sub-Inspector McLean, the defendant was found by a traffic inspector driving on the Hutt Road in an obvious state of intoxication. He was brought to the Police Station and examined by Dr. Shirer. He had not previously been before the Court for an offence of any descriptidn.
The accused had been driving a car for 12 years, said Mr. Mazengarb, and in the course of his employment drove a car lor the City Council. Yesterday was the City Corporation municipal picnic, and the defendant had had some drink.- On the way home the attention of a traffic inspector was drawn to his condition.
"The doctor's report is very definite," said Mr. Luxford, imposing sentence. "Every one of the tests shows positive alcoholism."
