GERMANY'S COLONIES
REMARK BY MR. W. M.
HUGHES
PRIME MINISTER OBJECTS
SYDNEY, January 24.
Mr. W. M. Hughes, M.P., is agaitl at variance with the Federal Ministry, &t the result of a remark he was report", ed to have made last week in an address to the Legacy Club when ha discussed German colonies.
"Many idealists are fond of asserting . that if the colonies are restored to Germany there will be world peace but the most casual examination of world affairs shows that to be an erroneous assumption," he said. •
The Prime Minister, Mr. J. A. Lyons> expressed the hope that Mr. Hughes would refrain from expressing an opinion on so delicate a matter. It now appears that the German Consul, Dr. Asmis, has asked the Prime Minister whether the views expressed by Mr. Hughes represent his own or those of the Federal Ministry, of which"Mr. Hughes is a member.
