THE BOOT INDUSTRY

Sir, For the last three months or more there have appeared in the newspapers at different times many reports and statements regarding the footwear industry in New Zealand. Many confusing and contradictory reasons have been given for the noticeable slackness of trade in this particular industry, one being that the New Zealand manufacturers had forced the footwear retailers to overstock. The following figures might interest the public generally for the footwear imports for eleven months up till November, 1937. The total number of pairs of men's, women's, and children's importations for that period reached the grand total of 1,345,632 pairs, at a total cost of £441,314. These figures do not include slippers of any description. It only requires a quick survey to weigh up the whole position, and if a move' is not made very soon the above figures spell only one thing for the local footwear industries, dependent industries, and all employees concerned. —I am, etc.,
